Carmarthen v Isle of Wight

Dragons Outwit the Wizards

Carmarthen boss Lawrence Fielding couldn’t hide his happiness after an epic 21-15 away victory over the Isle of Wight last Thursday May 23.

The Dragons started with an impressive heat win by their captain Joe Alcock and he also claimed the fastest MSDL race of the night. Although the heat ended with a share of the spoils, talented Tim Colley engaged in a hard fought battle with Morgan Williams and just narrowly missed out on third place.

Heat two saw debut Dragon Danny Woodward hit the deck on bend three but as he cleared the track in time his partner Luke Barnes kept the momentum going to reach the chequered flag first.
With two on the bounce, the dynamic duo, Barnes and Woodward made the gate and pulled off an impressive 5-1 to propel the Dragons 4-points clear.

Alcock hit the front in heat four not knowing the battle going on behind him. Coming out the first turn at the back, Colley past his opposition in a single move to sit comfortably in second place. But Wizard Watts swiftly returned the favour, leaving the Isle of Wight to claw back a 6-point deficit.
The Isle of Wight bagged their first heat advantage and pulled back 2-points in heat five. Colley, who was out in front leading the race, hit a bump and slid off causing the rest of the riders to lay their bikes down. Colley was excluded and the referee awarded the race win to Williams, with Barnes in second and Ben Ilsley packing in third place.
With 4-points clear going into the final heat, the Dragons only needed a 3-3 to win the meeting overall. Alcock hit the front first with Woodward close behind him but on the final bend Alcock slowed down due to a flat tyre. Woodward went past him for first place and then Watts just pipped Alcock to second place for a 2-4 heat advantage.
Carmarthen chief Lawrence Fielding said: “I just want to say a massive well done to all the riders for putting on an entertaining second half meeting. The scores were close to start with but I’m happy that our lads pulled off the win in the end. I would like to say thank you to everyone at the Isle of Wight for making all of us at Carmarthen feel very welcome.
