Competitors of the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship were competing at Harewood Hill for the final two rounds, of the 2024 season, over the weekend of 21st and 22nd September.

The Greenwood Cup and Mike Wilson Hillclimb meetings were Round’s seven and eight of the Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship, organised by the BARC Yorkshire Centre on the famous Yorkshire hill.

Also joining in on the action on the Saturday were a number of competitors from the Pre-War Austin Seven Club. Along with competitors from the TR Register and MG Car Club, who were on track both days.

With two practice runs and a timed run completed before the lunch break, followed by two timed runs in the afternoon and a total start entry of 150 cars.

Saturday’s weather turned out to be the better of the two days even though it was overcast. The sun did come out just after the lunch-break with a light breeze. This resulted in perfect track conditions, for a couple of competitors to set new class records:

Mike Wilson Hillclimb

On Sunday the Mike Wilson Hillclimb had a total start entry of 150 cars, although 10 drivers did not take the start.

Sunday morning was overcast with mist in the distance, looking towards the Wharfedale valley. With a cool breeze keeping the temperatures down both on and off the track.

Competition got underway with the two practice runs, followed by a timed run before the lunch break. Towards the end of the second timed run in the afternoon, it just started to rain but by the time that some competitors had started their third timed runs it was coming down enough that a number of competitors did not take their third run and some of the single seaters switching to wet tyres. Just when the organizers had the time to possibly get a forth timed run in the weather got the better of them and the season ended how it had started wet.

Only One class record was broken, Class 1 A, Road Cars Series Production up to and including 1400cc. The Class record had only stood for less than twenty four hours and was again set by Adam Riley in the VW UP, that he shares with Doug Mitchell, his father in-law. Adam managed to shave another tenth of a second off the record.

Harewood Hillclimb Championship

Adam Riley yet again retains the Harewood Hillclimb Championship crown after leading from the first event of the season and also setting several new class records for Class 1A, Road Cars series Production up to and including 1400cc in the front wheel drive VW UP car #65.

Adam first broke the class record in only his second meeting in the new car at Harewood. This was the Jim Thomson Hillclimb, in June. He then broke his own record in the Rescheduled Spring Championship event in August and on both meetings this weekend.

Adam is now a quadruple Harewood Champion, having won the Championship in 2023 driving Karl Jackson’s rear wheel drive Honda S2000 and in 2022 and 2021 driving his own Honda S2000. Simon Green driving his Westfield Duratec, car #165 finished in second place and Henry Moorhouse driving the Honda powered Westfield, car #115 in third place.

Henry Moorhouse and Simon Green have both been pushing Adam since the first meeting of the season back in May and have set their own Class records throughout the season.

Simon Green was second in Class 3G in the Harewood Open Hillclimb in May but at the Jim Thompson Hillclimb he won the Class, at the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb event he set a new Class record. Then again at the Rescheduled Spring Championship and the following day at the Summer Championship meeting. He won the class during the Greenwood Cup and Mike Wilson.

Fast Time of the Day Award Series (FTD Award Series)

David Tatham has led the series since the Yorkshire Speed Hillclimb meeting at the beginning of August. He had been driving his DJ Firehawk but due to engine issues he has had to swap to the McLaren M12C. He won the Montague Burton Hillclimb but since the Rescheduled Spring Championship meeting he has been driving the McLaren.

However, after dropped points are taken into account, Jake Bellerby wins the Harewood FTD Award Series driving his OMS 2000M, car #181 from Simon Green driving his Westfield Duratec, car #165 in second place and David Tatham driving the McLaren M12C, car #183 falls down to third place.
