British Touring Car Championship - Round 9
Silverstone - Report and Images by Dan Lowson
24 - 25th September 2022
The penultimate round of the 2022 BTCC season rolled into Silverstone last weekend which, by the time it had finished the championship standings, had been turned on it's head. #50 Colin Turkington arrived leading the championship in the BMW 330e M Sports but found his charge for the title halted in race one where he crashed out.
Starting in race two from the back of the grid almost ended any chance of a solid points haul in the remaining two races.
With Turkington out of the points others were able to take advantage, namely #6 Rory Butcher in the Norwich based Toyota Gazoo Racing UK Corolla.
In race one Butcher took the chequered flag, followed by #24 Jake Hill in the West Surrey Racing-prepared BMW 330e M-Sport, and Adam Morgan also in a BMW 330e M-Sport prepared by Car Gods with Ciceley Motorsport.
It was a role reversal in the second race with Hill taking the victory, Butcher second and Gordon Shedden in the Halfords Racing Honda Civic Type R third.
In the final race of the day, Hyundai driver Tom Ingram, starting on the second row of the grid went on to take the victory followed by Ash Sutton. All this means that Ash Sutton now takes a slender lead into the final round of the championship, leading Jake Hill by 5 points. Tom Ingram is a further 2 points back, with Colin Turkington in fourth place 20 points adrift of Ingram.
Brands Hatch plays host to the final rounds on 8 - 9 October, and with three races to contest, any of the top 4 drivers could still end the season as champion.
