The British Touring Car Championship along with its TOCA support series delivered an incredible weekend of enjoyable racing last weekend at Oulton Park. Even if the heat was quite punishing.

Last time out at Thruxton, Ash Sutton got his season going with his first win of the season in race 3 followed by fellow teammate Dan Cammish making it a great weekend for the Napa Racing UK team. Interestingly, title contender Tom Ingram wasn’t able to score a win after being demoted out of first place in race 2 following an early incident with Dan Cammish.

It was Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill who had a terrific weekend taking 2 wins out of a possible 3. It’s now Ash Sutton who holds the Driver’s Championship lead going to Oulton Park followed by Jak Hill and Tom Ingram.

British Touring Car Championship

Saturday’s action saw Tom Ingram in the Bristol Street Motors Hyundai i30N take another pole position, with Napa Racing Ash Sutton and Dan Cammish in P2 and 3. Unfortunately for Sutton, he wasn’t able to follow up after a strong challenge on Ingram at Knickerbrook, and this allowed Ingram to take his first win of the weekend, with Sutton and Dan Cammish filling out the remaining podium places.

Race 2 saw a chaotic start at the first turn. Adam Morgan spinning caused a chain reaction from the cars behind. Huff, Taylor-Smith and Chiltion tried to take avoiding action which ultimately led to Chilton getting sideways, but managing to keep his car under control and continue onwards.

Because of where Morgan was on track, the other cars following also had to take avoiding action off track including Smiley, Watson, Pearson and Osborne. However, the benefactor from all of this chaos was Josh Cook in his Toyota Corolla GR Sport who managed to sneak through, getting behind Jake Hill. Cook then went on to have an almighty lap taking the lead from Tom Ingram and in the end earning his first win in the BTCC, and became the third Toyota driver to take the chequered flag.

In Race 3 the reverse grid race saw the two Power Maxed racers on the front row and in prime position for a decent result, with Mikey Doble in pole position and his teammate Aron Taylor-Smith just behind. Mikey Doble put up a stellar drive, staying in first place until the very last lap. Jake Hill in his WSR run BMW 330e M Sport came charging through the field after starting in 4th behind Dan Cammish, and Hill took the lead at Knickerbrook.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be a fruitless race for the leading team Napa Racing UK, as Sam Osborne retired due to faults on his car and Ash Sutton finished last after he pitted due to a tyre blowout.

Mini Challenge JCW

After a heck of a lot of lap times being disallowed due to track limits on the Saturday, it was Nathan Edwards who took the pole position for race one, with Maximus Hall in second and Tom Ovenden in third. Championship leader Dan Zelos started in fourth. Race one on Saturday saw Nathan Edwards convert his pole into a win, with Ovenden behind and Nelson King taking the final spot on the podium after starting in fifth. Dan Zelos finished just behind and Maximus Hall dropped to fifth.

The final race on Sunday for the Mini Challenge JCW saw pretty much the same order as on Saturday for the top positions. Lydia Walmsely dropped to 15th after starting in 10th. I also witnessed a nice battle between the two Napa Racing UK drivers, Lewis Selby and Jamie Osborne, from where I was on that day on the main straight with Osborne finishing in front of his fellow teammate.

Porsche Sprint Challenge GB

Saturday saw Thomas Bradshaw take pole position narrowly by 0.088 seconds from Will Jenkins who started alongside Bradshaw on the front row. However, it was Sebastian Hopkins who took the first race win after starting in third, with Bradshaw and Jenkins filling out the remaining podium places.

Moving on to Sunday’s action, Will Jenkins who started second, went off track at the first corner dropping back to 5th, which is where he ultimately finished. Thomas Bradshaw went from pole to flag to take the win from Hopkins, with Ethan Hampton taking third after starting in sixth. Max Coates finished in front of Will Jenkins in fourth. The final race of the weekend saw Will Jenkins recover to second, with Bradshaw taking another win and Max Coates finishing in third and Ethan Hampton in fourth.

Hagerty Radical Cup UK

The Hagerty Radical Cup UK joins the BTCC supporting package at Oulton Park once again and for the final time this year. Saturday saw Chris Lulham take pole position for the SR3 class by over a second from Luke Hilton who will start on the second row. The fastest driver in the SR1 class was Will Redford and he would start as the leading SR1 driver.

There wasn’t much change in terms of positions gained or lost in race 1, with Chris Lulham taking the victory for SR3 and Will Redford taking the win for the SR1s. SR3 driver Jason Rishover did lose two positions before the end, being overtaken by Oscar Joyce and Peter Tyler. John Macleod also lost one position with Gavin McAlpine behind being the last SR3.

Race two saw a little more action with Matt Hammond being the biggest gainer for the SR1 class and taking 9 after starting 13. However, it was Chris Lulham who took another win of the weekend in the SR3s, but for the SR1 class it was Sam Shaw who finished in front.

Sunday’s race three saw the victors from race two take the final race for the weekend, although they had to work for it as Chris Lulham started in 4th and Sam Shaw just below where he finished.

Caterham Seven UK Championship

The Caterham Seven UK Championship also joined the Oulton Park TOCA package. In qualifying, Paul Donkin and Lewis Thompson took the front row, with Harry Senior just behind.

Saturday’s race day saw Paul Donkin take a well-deserved first and a second place, with Lewis Thompson taking the second race victory after finishing fourth in race one. In the final race on Sunday, Lewis Thompson took yet again another win, with Harry Senior making up two places to finish in second.

The BTCC Championship heads into the summer break with Jake Hill as the new championship leader on 211 points, Tom Ingram in second on 207 and Ash Sutton dropping down to third with 187 points. There are five more rounds to go with the next round at Croft on the 27-28 July.
