A motorsport postcard from Yorkshire

A postcard from Yorkshire – Race the Waves and Harewood Hillclimb 17 May 2024

Report by David Harbey

A few days away in Yorkshire “happened” to coincide with two interesting motorsport events. Race the Waves on the south beach at Bridlington and the British Hillclimb Championship visiting Harewood.

Race the Waves is a new event for me, although PistonClick were present in 2023. It’s not motorsport in its purest form as the runs on the beach are not timed but I was looking forward to some decent action to shoot.

Alas the weather gods decided that a proper sea fret would be present all day Saturday somewhat curtailing activities. Sunday was much better but by then I was at Harewood.

Anyhow, here’s a selection of images to sum up Saturday including some of the surrounding activities.

Sunday dawned misty in Scarborough but as I headed towards Harewood the sunshine made its presence felt and a beautiful day for speed hillclimbing ensued.

Although this was round 5 and 6 of the championship, no points had been scored to date. Prescott had been deferred to August and Craigantlet had been abandoned due to a river running across the course - that British weather again. A good days action ensued seen here at Orchard, Farmhouse, Quarry and the finish line.

A full report from last weekends Harewood meeting can be found here: Harewood Open and British Championship Hillclimb.

Proving that it ain’t just about cars and bikes, a trip to RSPB Bempton followed on Monday. I have to say that I prefer the (generally) more predictable path of cars and motorbikes to gannets!

More reports from the British Hillclimb Championship will follow in 2024, including a return to the superb hillclimb at Doune, all being well.
